Read an interview with HECC Volunteer Pete Howlett.

1. What is your volunteer role at Howard and Evanston Community Center?
I currently assist in an ESL class Monday-Thursday in the mornings. I sometimes tutor students with citizenship and also tutor students individually. I have also participated in the HARP reading program at a local elementary school, and I plan on continuing with all this!

2. What do you do in these roles?
I help students learn English. I work in small groups with students, I help with reading groups and also with speaking practice, comprehension, etc. In the HARP program, I work with one student throughout the academic year to help develop reading skills.

3. How long have you volunteered with HACC?
I have volunteered for about 3-4 years.

4. What do you like about volunteering in this way?
I like to be able to assist non-native speakers to participate in our society and be productive members of their community.

5. You volunteer a lot with us, so what are your thoughts on what you would like to see in the future of HACC?
I would love to see HECC more involved with the community and attract more clients.

6. What advice would you give someone who is interested in getting involved with tutoring or volunteering?
I would say don’t hesitate, just come on in! We need you, and we want your support!

Thank YOU, Peter, for all you do!
